Discovery, BCC Plot More ‘Planet Earth’

Discovery Channel and the BBC are in talks to produce a sequel to their blockbuster high-definition nature series “Planet Earth,” said Jane Root, executive VP and general manager of Discovery Channel.
The plans include the production of another mammoth, globetrotting HD outing, possibly emphasizing the impact of global warming.
Discovery is keen to get another “Planet Earth” series launched as quickly as possible, since the first series took five years to make. The network hopes the length of production time can be shortened for the follow-up.
Much of the content for the 11-episode “Planet Earth” was determined by veteran cameramen and producers brainstorming wishlists of “shots that got away” and never-before-seen wildlife and angles.
The sequel will have similar ambitions, but might also show how much has changed in various locales during the few years since the “Earth” team last visited.
“Earth” premiered to a 3.6 average household rating, with about 15 percent of the viewership on Discovery HD Theater (about 500,000 homes). Subsequent airings have maintained at least a 3.0 household rating. Though Discovery has not yet released the series on DVD, the BBC version has been a top seller on Amazon.com.
