ABC, Cox Team for Advanced VOD Platform

May 8, 2007  •  Post A Comment

Disney-ABC Television, ESPN and Cox Communications are teaming up to produce a digital platform that will combine multifaceted VOD and advanced advertising with ABC network content.
Part of this trial includes disabling the VOD fast-forward option for on demand content and syndicating ABC’s broadband player to Cox.net.
A non-binding letter of intent has been signed between Cox and ABC, with terms still in the process of being finalized. The trial itself will be put to work this fall in Cox’s Orange County cable television system before adding additional markets.
Key elements of the initiative include:

  • Episodes of “Desperate Housewives,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost” and “Ugly Betty”, as well as select ESPN on ABC college football events, will be available for Cox Digital customers in the FreeZone section of Cox’s On Demand service. The prime-time series will be available for viewing the day after their broadcast premiere, with Cox disabling the fast-forward option on its VOD service for all offered ABC and ESPN on ABC content.
  • Dynamic ad insertion on Cox’s On Demand platform
  • A syndication of ABC’s broadband player for the first time ever to a cable operator, providing Cox.net users in Orange County with the ability to watch ad-supported, full episodes of many of ABC’s prime-time series online the day after they air on the network.
