‘Dancing’ a High Stepper for ABC

In preliminary Nielsen ratings for Tuesday night, ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” topped Fox’s “American Idol” in households for the first time.
The season finale of “Dancing” had a 14.9 HH rating compared to part one of the “Idol” finale, which earned a 14.5 in households. At 8 p.m., “Idol” continued to handily dominate in the premium 18 to 49 demographic, scoring a 9.3 and winning the night for Fox, while at 9 p.m. “Dancing” had a 6.6 in 18-49.
After “Idol,” the debut of the Mark Burnett/Steven Spielberg reality series “On the Lot” earned a 4.1 in 18-49, retaining 44 percent of its “Idol” lead in.
ABC was second, with a “Bachelor” special (2.7) leading into “Dancing.” Despite its season-high performance, “Dancing” was down 24 percent compared to its finale last spring.
CBS came in third with the season finale of “NCIS” (3.3) followed by a movie.
NBC was fourth with “Dateline” (1.6), a repeat, then the season finale of “Law & Order: SVU” (4.1).
The CW aired a recap special of its canceled “Veronica Mars,” which earned a 0.8, followed by the series finale with a 0.9.
