Discovery Marks 20th Year of Shark Week

May 16, 2007  •  Post A Comment

It’s getting warm. People are starting to go to the beach. It must be time for Shark Week on Discovery Channel.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event in which the channel’s entire program schedule is devoted to those denizens of the deep. Last year, 20 million viewers tuned in to at least one part of a Shark Week program.
Shark Week will stretch from July 29 to Aug. 4 and will feature eight new specials, starting with “Ocean of Fear: Worst Shark Attack Ever.”
“Ocean of Fear” tells the story of the 1945 sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, which capsized after it was attacked by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. About 900 men floated in the water without lifeboats waiting to be rescued, but only 321 came out of the water. The rest died from starvation, dehydration, exposure and shark attacks.
This year, viewers will be able to vote for shows from past Shark Weeks that they’d like to see again. Balloting will be held on Discovery.com from May 25 through July 1. The top vote-getters will air at 8 p.m. during Shark Week.
