With “American Idol’s” season coming to an end and “So You Think You Can Dance” gearing up, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe finds himself taking bites from an ever-full plate. In this week’s exclusive Backlot Talk, the showrunner dishes on what keeps him going and who he thinks should take home the cake.
Tuesday’s show had Melinda, Blake and Jordin going three rounds on the road to the “Idol” title, with Blake performing the “best across the board,” Melinda “won the first round” and in the third round, Jordin “just the best she’s been in a long time,” Mr. Lythgoe said.
But despite Blake’s overall appeal, the producer added, “Melinda and Jordin are both vocally more talented than Blake.”
“I think it’s very possible that because there are two girls, they may split the female vote,” he said. “And you’re always going to have a vote for the male. So it’s going to be an interesting result.”
At the end of the night, however, Mr. Lythgoe said all three contestants were “just superb.”
“I’m energized by the talent that we’re working with,” he said. “If you could get to work with people like Melinda, Blake and Jordin, it doesn’t matter how tired you are, how ill you are, you’re just energized by them. I just wanted to stand up on everybody’s performance last night and give them a standing ovation.”
