Discovery Shows Off Lauren Car Collection

If you like the polo shirts, you’ll love the cars.
On Oct. 6, the Discovery Channel will premiere a special about designer Ralph Lauren’s collection of automobiles.
The one-hour program, shot in high definition, is called “Speed, Style and Beauty: The Ralph Lauren Car Collection.” The cars represent one of the most important groups of vintage sports and touring cars in the world, the network said.
The styles and designs Mr. Lauren has collected are more like mechanical sculptures than mere means of transportation.
The special tells detailed stories behind some of Mr. Lauren’s most prized possessions. These include:

  • A 1929 Blower Bentley, a heavy car with a supercharger that was designed to win races. Ian Fleming had James Bond driving a Blower Bentley in his early novels.
  • A 1930 Mercedes-Benz Count Trossi SSK, designed for an aristocratic racecar driver; it features an art nouveau style with a long hood accounting for more than half its body.
  • A 1939 Bugatti Type 575C Atlantic Coupe, which is one of only three models built and one of two still in existence. It’s a sinister-looking car, with exposed seams and button-head rivets running down its spine and around its fenders.
  • A 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, designed by Sergio Scaglietti, who was known for designing cars with long torpedo-like bodies and sleek covered headlights. Testa Rossa means redhead, and is called that because of the red cylinder heads of its V12 engine.
  • A 2005 McLaren F1LM, the world’s fastest production car, with a top speed of 225 miles per hour. Like a Formula One racer, the driver sits in the center, with passengers on either side. Only five have been built.
“Speed, Style and Beauty” features commentary from car experts Doug Nye, Winston Goodfellow and Gordon Murray, as well as the director of Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, Malcolm Rogers, and Darcy Kuronen, who curated an exhibit of Mr. Lauren’s cars at the MFA in 2005.
The special was directed by Peter Schnall.

My uncle (Ike Behar) who is a Men’s Shirt manufacturer is very well known for his high quality shirts. He manufactured almost all of Ralph’s Dress Shirts from Ralph’s beginning to 1982.
