HBO and NBC led the winners Saturday at a bawdy 59th Annual Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
HBO took home 15 statues, with its made-for-television movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” winning the most awards. Its five wins included makeup, single camera picture editing, sound mixing, sound editing and cinematography.
NBC netted 12 awards, including two for “Saturday Night Live,” and one for “30 Rock,” in which Elaine Stritch won guest actress in a comedy series.
Assisted by a cane, Ms. Stritch made her way to the stage and kicked off the blue language.
“I can’t get over that I still feel the way I do. It is un-f**king-believable,” Ms. Stritch said as she accepted her statuette. She joked that she hurt her foot after she lost her balance at an Alcoholic Anonymous meeting. “I should have stayed home and had a drink,” she said.
“SNL” digital short “Dick in a Box” won an Emmy for original music and lyrics. “SNL” cast member Andy Samberg said the short, which involved Samberg and guest host Justin Timberlake giving their genitals as a Christmas present, was only created in 48 hours from conception to air.
When asked about a sequel to the short, Samberg said “We thought about ‘Balls in a Bucket,’ but we don’t think it was as catchy.”
Fox’s “American Idol” garnered its first Emmy win after six seasons, winning the Governor’s Award and technical direction for a miniseries, movie or special for its “Idol Gives Back” special.
Other notable wins include John Goodman for guest actor in a drama for NBC’s “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” Stanley Tucci for guest actor in a comedy for USA’s “Monk,” and Leslie Caron for guest actress in a drama for NBC’s “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.”
Ms. Caron, an Oscar-nominated actress, hasn’t been on American television since 1987’s “Falcon Crest.” She said she had always been fond of “Law and Order,” and enjoyed the script, which brought her back to American television.
“I find it very satisfying at the end of the one hour film, the villain gets caught,” she said of why she likes “Law and Order.”
After putting on a display after losing last year, Kathy Griffin won for Bravo’s reality program “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.”
Ms. Griffin said she gave the middle finger to the cast of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” after she lost last year in the same category. This year, Ms. Griffin came prepared with attention-grabbing remarks.
“Can you believe this s**t?” she said. “I guess hell froze over.”
Later, she said Jesus had nothing to do with her award win.
“So, all I can say is ‘Suck it, Jesus.’ This award is my god now,” she added.
The four hour awards will be shown in a two-hour format on E! Network on Sept. 15 at 8 p.m., the night before the Primetime Emmys are scheduled to air live on Fox.

Elaine Stritch has a problem. Alcoholics are bad enough. But female alcoholics are disgusting. There is NOTHING funny about her or her drinking!!!!!!!
