NBCU Stations Group Taps KNSD’s Schwartz as Exec VP of News, Promotion

Recently named NBC Universal Television Stations President John Wallace has promoted Phyllis Schwartz to executive VP of news, promotion and original content for the station group. Ms. Schwartz, the well-regarded president and general manager of NBCU-owned KNSD-TV in San Diego, will remain based in that city.
Mr. Wallace also named Steve Schwaid, who has overseen news and programming for the station group for six years, senior VP of strategic growth initiatives. In the newly created position, Mr. Schwaid will focus on maximizing content-sharing and growth opportunities across the company’s news divisions.
Both positions report to Mr. Wallace and are effective immediately, although Ms. Schwartz will help with the transition until her successor at KNSD is identified.
In her new role, Ms. Schwartz will be responsible for local news, digital and original content at NBCU’s 10 English-language stations, as well as on-air promotion. She also will coordinate the stations’ local efforts with other outlets across the company.
Ms. Schwartz rose through the news ranks at CBS-owned WBBM-TV and ABC-owned WLS-TV in Chicago before becoming VP of news and creative services at NBC-owned WMAQ-TV Chicago. She took over KNSD-TV eight years ago.
“Phyllis is a fantastic stations executive with a broad range of knowledge about local television news,” Mr. Wallace said in Tuesday’s announcement. “As we grow this key role, she’s the right leader to oversee our news and promotion efforts, strengthening the communication across our division and ensuring that our local content remains relevant and valuable to our consumers in today’s media environment.
“Steve’s passion for the news business is unparalleled,” Mr. Wallace said. “I have no doubt this same energy will translate into great success as we continue to adapt and improve our content-sharing and distribution systems for today’s digital age.”
