EchoStar, DirecTV Raise Concerns About Digital Conversion Deadline
With the Feb. 17, 2009, transition to digital TV looming, satellite broadcasters EchoStar and DirecTV are warning the Federal Communications Commission that they might not make the deadline, TVpredictions.com reports. On that date, broadcasters must switch over from analog to digital signals, and EchoStar and DirecTV are afraid local stations might not make the transition in time, which could cause a blackout of local stations for some viewers. Both satellite broadcasters are urging local stations to convert well before the deadline, TVpredictions.com said.
Panasonic Begins Cross-County HD Tour
Panasonic is rolling across the country to get the word out about high definition. Starting this week and running through January, Panasonic is on the road with the Living in High Definition nationwide tour in a fleet of specially designed trucks, decked out with a faux living room to showcase high-definition products, including 1080p HDTV screens, Blu-ray disc players and HD camcorders. Participants will be able to take pictures with the camcorders and see the playback on the 1080p screens. The tour “is designed to introduce consumers to and engage them on all of the creative possibilities that our suite of high-definition products can bring to their lives,” Bob Greenberg, Panasonic’s VP of brand marketing, said in a statement.
TiVo Takes Tumble Over HD Sales in Second Quarter
Digital recorder producer TiVo announced a $17.7 million loss for its second quarter ended July 31. The biggest slice of that loss is an $11.2 million writedown on standard-definition DVRs, the company reported last week. CEO Tom Rogers said in a statement that high HD product sales resulted in a “tepid trend in the standard-definition market,” leaving TiVo with an excess of SD products. TiVo also dropped 145,000 subscribers to 4.2 million from the previous quarter, the company said. With a hefty $799 pricetag for its Series 3 HD DVR, TiVo in July released online a $299 HD set in an attempt to stimulate HD sales.

  3. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  4. Keep focusing on your blog. I love how we can all express our feelings. This is an extremely nice blog here 🙂
