One way to tell what people are looking forward to watching is by checking their digital video recorders.

The folks at TiVo have done just that, and as the season started, the shows chosen for TiVo Season Passes are largely the same as last year’s top 10.

More interesting are the new shows viewers have set Season Passes for, which means all new episodes will be recorded—and possibly played back.

The only new shows to crack the top 50 overall so far this year are ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff “Private Practice” and NBC’s “Bionic Woman.”

“Premiere week’s TiVo Season Pass results serve as an indication of early marketing success and buzz generation, as well as the public’s overall appetite for these shows,” said Todd Juenger, VP and general manager of TiVo Audience Research & Measurement. “Although subscriber behavior habitually begins slowly—some are slow to add a new show to Season Pass and may sample it for a few weeks before making that commitment—‘Private Practice’ and ‘Bionic Woman,’ two highly anticipated shows, opened with high expectations from a confident audience.”

The initial rankings are not always an indicator that a show will be successful. Last year, NBC’s ballyhooed “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” was on top of the list of new shows. It eventually was passed by NBC’s “Heroes,” which is now in the Top 10 list.
