‘Today’ Team Readying for Extreme Global Challenge

Oct 16, 2007  •  Post A Comment

NBC Universal’s first empire-wide “Green Is Universal” week will include “Today’s” most extreme broadcast challenge yet, with Matt Lauer inside the Arctic Circle, Ann Curry at the South Pole and Al Roker in an endangered equatorial rainforest in the first live, simultaneous broadcast from “the ends of the earth.”
Mr. Lauer, who has never touched down in the Arctic on one of his nine “Where in the World Is Matt Lauer?” trips, conceded that it would be “absolutely impossible” to say this splashy undertaking itself will be carbon-neutral—or that it can be accomplished without some use of private transportation.
However, he said, the goal for the future is to “examine every footprint we leave.”
Bravo Media President Lauren Zalaznick, who chairs the NBCU Green Council, plans further announcements next week about the ways in which green themes will be incorporated into programming and other activities across all the company’s platforms throughout the week of Nov. 4.
In the meantime, a less-than-green broadcast blitz about climate change is not inconsistent with the stages of the NBCU green strategy of first raising awareness of the situation, then activating plans to lessen the carbon footprint left by the company’s many divisions and, finally, getting results from measures taken.
“It takes a series of steps to become carbon-neutral,” Ms. Zalaznick said.
While Mr. Lauer, Ms. Curry and Mr. Roker broadcast live from their respective locations Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 5-6, Meredith Vieira will remain in New York to handle overarching interviews and segments along with breaking news.
