Ultra HD Gets Cooking With ‘Appetizing Adventures’

Voom HD Networks’ Ultra HD channel is continuing its mission to build shows around larger-than-life talent, serving up “Appetizing Adventures With Luke Mangan,” premiering Nov. 7.
The series features the Aussie celebrity chef and restaurateur traveling far and wide throughout Asia in a quest to find new dishes to incorporate into the menu of Glass Brasserie, his gourmet restaurant in Sydney.
“The visually beautiful countries and the foods and experiences are perfect for the HD format because they literally jump off the screen, and Mr. Mangan’s magnetic personality jumps off the screen as well—a perfect combo for Ultra,” said Elizabeth Dewey, VP of programming for Ultra HD. “What makes this show perfect are the exotic cuisines of Asia and the rich colors, which really pop in HD.”
Mr. Mangan strives to learn the countries’ culinary customs, samples their top dishes and tries to master new cooking techniques. At the end of each episode, special invited guests and celebrities sample his Asian fusion cuisines and share their critiques.
“It’s completely emblematic of the direction we’re going in,” Ms. Dewey said of the show. “It’s commercial- and entertainment-based, and the series is based around a talent and celebrating that talent. The direction is exactly where we want to go as a network.”
This direction is exemplified in another new series, “Spa Seekers,” which features Jaymee and Lindsey Ong, sisters whose fundamental differences provide unique perspectives along the journey to Asia’s best-known spa hot spots. Currently in production, the series is slated to premiere early next year.
Other series on the network include the fashion industry-focused “Full Frontal Fashion”; “Behind the Label,” a look into the powerful icons in the worlds of fashion and beauty; and “Reservations Required,” which tracks buzz-worthy restaurants.
“We started out fashion-centric at first, and my overall plan now is that I want to broaden Ultra to become more of an aspirational lifestyle network for women, all through a style filter,” Ms. Dewey said.”
