Alvarez Exits KCBS/KCAL

Nov 28, 2007  •  Post A Comment

Linda Alvarez, who became the first Latina to anchor a weekday English-language TV station newscast in her hometown of Los Angeles in 1986, is signing off at CBS-owned KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV on Sunday.
Over the course of 34 years in local TV news, 22 of them in Los Angeles, Ms. Alvarez has earned 12 Emmys and numerous other awards.
She joined KCBS in 2003, after having worked at KNBC-TV across town since returning to the city in which she was born and raised in 1985.
“Linda Alvarez has always been one of the classiest and most highly regarded journalists in Southern California,” Don Corsini, president and general manager of KCBS and KCAL, said in the announcement Wednesday. “We are sad to see her go, but understand and respect her desire to start spending more time at home with her husband, Leo, and enjoying the finer things in life.
“Linda was the first person to come into my office when our duopoly was formed in 2002 and graciously offered to do anything we needed to make the marriage of our two stations a success,” Mr. Corsini continued. “Ever since, she has backed up those words on a daily basis. She has done everything from spending a month in the Persian Gulf as an embedded reporter during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003) to being one of the first people in the newsroom when the Malibu fires broke out this past Saturday.
“And she has always been a tremendous ambassador for us in the community, where she has always done a great job of representing us at countless local events,” he added.

  1. Ms. Alvarez is a beautiful person, inside and out and I believe that is reflected in her television persona. CBS is losing a real trooper and someone who will be difficult to replace.

  2. Congratulations for making such an indelible mark in the minds and hearts of TV viewers throughout LA.
I look forward to learning some broadcast journalism tips from you, now there’ll be more time on your hands…

  3. Linda Alvarez is a pioneer who broke through ethnic barriers to achieve success in a tough L.A. market. She pronounced Alvarez using Spanish intonation, and she is an important role model for all the young potential anchors that saw her and believed they had a chance for success too.

  4. CBS is losing a class act……….the human element Ms. Alverez put into her work can never be replaced………always a gracious and clever newscaster, who made the news, even at its worst, feel like she was actually telling straight to you with heartfelt emotion. She will truely be missed by all of us who are tired of the “average” reporting we are having to deal with on a daily basis………much good luck to you Ms. Alverez, you will be a success in any endeavor you take on in your new path in life………

  5. Linda was a class act. I am sad to say that this is yet another example of the TV news industry gender double standard. Unfortunately this industry has a history of discharging female journalist as they get older (less attractive?), yet male journalist are allowed to work well into their 60’s, 70’s or 80’s. I call it the older man/younger woman syndrome. Linda was replaced by Sharon Tay, a much younger (Attractive?) Asian woman. When will it end?

  6. Are we to believe Don Corsini – KCBS GM – I think not. My guess is she was pushed/shoved out the door. Since she has been replaced with a gorgeous blonde half her age, my guess is Linda Alvarez was shown the door. I hope you got a big payout.
–Don C — we are not fooled by your empty words.

  7. KCBS and Los Angeles television’s loss is Linda’s families gain!
I believe Linda, Vera and Laura are the three most beautiful women on LA television….
I can’t believe Ms. Alvarez was pressured out because of her age, but stranger things have happened.
Best wishes to you Ms. Alvarez and thank you for your outstanding journalistic talent, your beauty and talent – you will be greatly missed by this viewer…
    Regards,
    Jim

  8. I always wondered why she changed the pronunciation of her last name.
While with channel 4 she pronounced it the anglo way. Sometime after leaving that station she started pronouncing it with Spanish intonations. A
little pandering to our hispanic friends and neighbors?
I have no inside info but I think she was pushed out for younger news readers.
I saw her in late Nov., and she looked terrible, puffy faced, looked like she had been crying.

  9. I am appalled at the recent dissmissals of veteran anchors Hal Green and Ann Martin, (both class acts) due to KCAL’S and CBS downsizing, yeah right!!!!!, if you had to get rid of anchors for any reason then why not that big boobed bimbo who tries to relate the news to us @ 2:00 pm on KCAL, or Laura Diaz, what’s going on here????????????????, could it possibly be their ages. I hope the stations get sued BIG-TIME. Boobar 4/2/2008
