Sony Pictures Television has cleared 45% of the country with upcoming new court strip “Judge Karen.” The series, which will launch next fall for the 2008-09 season, has earned clearances for stations representing the Tribune, CBS and Weigel station groups.
“Judge Karen” has been sold to Tribune’s WPIX-TV in New York, as well as WPHL-TV in Philadelphia. Weigel’s WCIU-TV in Chicago will carry the series, as well as the CBS-owned outlets in Dallas, San Francisco and Boston.
“Our goal is to help our clients expand their audience by delivering hit television shows that are compatible with their lineups,” said John Weiser, president of distribution for Sony Pictures Television. “Court shows prevail as one of the most advertiser-friendly genres with a high success rate. We immediately recognized upon meeting Judge Karen that she has all the qualities needed to be a successful TV courtroom judge.”
Judge Karen Mills-Francis is a Miami native who received her law degree from the University of Florida Law School and subsequently worked for four years in Miami’s Office of the Public Defender. She spent the next two years defending juveniles in delinquency court before moving on to adult criminal court. She tried more than 100 cases as an attorney in private practice, where she mediated family matters, including divorce and child dependency actions. She was elected judge and retained her seat against opposition in the 2006 elections; she still holds the position today.
