DirecTV’s Strategy Man

The player: Derek Chang, executive vice president of content strategy and development for DirecTV Inc.
The play: Chang helped oversee DirecTV’s jump to 87 high-definition channels from 18 at the beginning of the year. With another satellite scheduled for launch during the first half of 2008, DirecTV expects to offer 150 national channels and 1,500 local channels in HD.
The pitch: Chang manages relationships between DirecTV and content partners such as the National Football League, Walt Disney Co. and Viacom Inc. “As we strategized around this, we thought that, rather than look for a lot of new unique HD channels, people were going to want to watch what they were already watching,” Chang said. “That’s where most of the development money is being spent.”
Backstory: The 39-year-old Connecticut native has worked in cable or satellite television since graduating Stanford Business School in 1994. Before joining DirecTV last year as senior vice president of strategy and development, Chang worked for Charter Communications Inc., the No. 3 U.S. cable operator, and the YES Network, which broadcasts the New York Yankees and New Jersey Nets. He has a bachelor’s degree from Yale University.
Blu-ray or HD-DVD: Chang declined to say which he thinks is the better format. “This particular format war has probably stunted the growth of the category,” Chang said. “People don’t want to get caught spending a fair amount of money on the wrong equipment.”

  1. Come on, who are the people who are looking at this **** and keeps making it popular? Show after show, magazine after magazine! I don’t care about Britney, Britney shaving her head and “Paul Funky Fresh 50 g’s Jackson Diddy” I hope your “crib” burns in hell!!!!

  2. Everyone will want another person to put on a pedestal and glamorize ; I don’t . People who find themselves notorious for being famous use up a ridiculous amount of space in our lives and they are excessively overpayed.
