‘Kimmel’ Staff Suspended
As with other late-night TV staffs, the workers at ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” have been suspended. The show has been out of production during the writers strike, Broadcasting & Cable reports. Sources close to the situation say Kimmel is covering his staff’s salaries during the suspension, B&C says.
Contract Talks Resume After Four-Day Break
The Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers returned to the table Tuesday, with the WGA offering its counter to last week’s AMPTP offer, Daily Variety reports. The WGA is asking for tiered compensation for digital media based on how many times a piece of content is viewed, along with the flat $250 annual residual the AMPTP offered, the newspaper says. After analyzing the AMPTP’s offer, the WGA said that the two sides’ positions are about $120 million apart, Daily Variety says.
‘Lost’s’ Cuse Pledges Allegiance to Writers Cause
“Lost” showrunner Carlton Cuse has sent a message out to Writers Guild of America members about standing firm with them after the Wall Street Journal reported that Cuse was returning to non-writing duties, Deadline Hollywood Daily reports. Mr. Cuse said that after the AMPTP’s offer last Thursday, he is dedicated to the WGA’s plight and can’t in good conscience continue working on “Lost” until the matter is resolved, the blog says.
Daly Returns to Airwaves
“Last Call with Carson Daly” is the first late-night talk show to return to the airwaves during the strike, the Los Angeles Times says. The lack of writers was the main thrust of the show. Addressing the subject head-on, Mr. Daly said the reason he came back was to avoid seeing his staff fired, the Times says. The show was stop-and-go, with Mr. Daly asking his producer how much more time he had to fill. But, contrary to an e-mail from obtained by The Smoking Gun, the show did not feature any solicited jokes from his relatives, the Times says.
