Writers, Studios to Start Talking?
After last week’s deal between the Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers produced an agreement on how to split revenue from digital video, Daily Variety is reporting that communication is beginning between studios and the Writers Guild of America, which is on strike. Those feelers could lead to an informal discussion starting as early as Tuesday. Over the weekend, WGA leaders asked members in a letter to remain patient and faithful, citing new side deals the guild has made with Mandate Pictures, Overt Operations/Anonymous Content, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and Sixth Floor Literary Properties.

CBS Drops 20 Development Deals
CBS has snipped about 20 development projects from its slate as it continues weathering the writers strike, the Hollywood Reporter says. Most of those cut were drama deals, the newspaper says. Other networks are considering the same measures, but wouldn’t comment on the move, the newspaper reports.

Hollywood Optimistic About Directors’ Deal
Hollywood reacted positively to last week’s contract agreement between the Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, Daily Variety reports.
Most of those interviewed, including director Oliver Stone and actor George Clooney, applauded the signing and hoped it would kick-start the Writers Guild of America talks into a more productive mode, the newspaper says.

Oscars Will Go On, Red Carpet and All
Gil Cates, the Oscar telecast producer, said the Academy Awards, along with the red carpet, will go on, writers strike or not, the Los Angeles Times reports. Mr. Cates said the Oscars has a large enough catalog of clips from its 80-year history to make the show entertaining, and the Oscar show will not be canceled. But he’s praying the actors do show up for the event, the newspaper says. Oscar nominations will be announced Tuesday morning.

I think the Oscars will be especially dull if SAG members choose not to show. Awards shows are a snooze fest anyway… But, without star power, I can see it being even worse than usual.
