Ferguson to Entertain at Correspondents Dinner

No sooner did Scottish-born CBS late-nighter Craig Ferguson become an American citizen than he told viewers of “The Late, Late Show” Monday that he will be the headliner at the White House Correspondents Association dinner April 26.
Mr. Ferguson, who averages more than 1.75 viewers weeknights in the time slot following his boss, “Late Show” host David Letterman, will entertain a much smaller audience at the correspondents dinner. But the 2,800-strong celebrity-savvy crowd will be full of political and entertainment A-listers as well as President George W. Bush in his farewell appearance as host of the annual dinner.
Mr. Ferguson’s mix of smart and humane but slightly naughty comedy should go over well with the crowd, which over the years has caromed from too-edgy headliners such as Don Imus and Stephen Colbert to last year’s ultra-benign Rich Little.
The day after being sworn in as a U.S. citizen, Mr. Ferguson, who has been taking flying lessons, soloed for the first time and watched the Super Bowl for the first time as an American. (On Friday night, using his usual tactic of picking winners based on the team logo, he had said the New England Patriots would win. Of course, it was the New York Giants.)
Mr. Ferguson showed a video of his (and several hundred others’) swearing-in ceremony, which clearly touched him. It ended with him leaving and declaring, “I’m going to exercise my right to freedom. I’m taking off my pants and I’m walking home buck naked.” A Chyroned postscript said, “Citizen Ferguson arrested at 12:02 p.m. on Santa Monica Blvd. for indecent exposure.”
“You become an American, you fly a plane, you sweat chili out of every pore. There cannot be a better weekend for a Scotsman in America. It cannot happen,” he said. “But there’s always one. Lawrence Tynes. New York Giants kicker. From Scotland. He won the Super Bowl.”
