‘Knight Rider’ Drives NBC’s Sunday Victory

“Knight Rider” was king of the road this weekend, helping NBC win Sunday, while Fox nabbed a nightly win on the shoulders of Gregory House, M.D., during the Presidents Day holiday weekend.
Sunday
Sunday was ’80s night on NBC, which trotted out two 1980s institutions (“American Gladiators” and “Knight Rider”) to win the night.
NBC took in a 4.0 in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic, according to preliminary Nielsen stats. “Gladiators’” two-hour season finale posted a 3.0, while the much-anticipated “Knight Rider” television movie won the night with a 5.0.
“Rider” scored the highest ratings of a television movie on any network since ABC’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God” in March 2005.
ABC (3.7) came in second with new episodes of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (2.8), “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (4.6) and “Brothers & Sisters” (3.0).
Fox took third with a 3.2, mainly due to NASCAR overrun (4.5) and new episodes of its animated comedies.
Sunday was a testing ground for CBS (2.1), which debuted Showtime’s “Dexter” at 10 p.m. to a 2.3. That was CBS’ highest-rated show for the night, beating new episodes of “60 Minutes” (1.9), “Big Brother” (2.2) and “Cold Case” (2.1).
The ratings are OK, but who cares? Think of the exposure. A 2.3 is a whopping 667% over “Dexter’s” Showtime fall 2006 premiere (0.3).
The CW (0.3) was fifth with comedy repeats.
Monday
“Deal or No Deal,” a consistent utility player on NBC, put up its highest rating in more than a year (5.2) to win the night and to give NBC the win with a 3.8.
Continuing the recent tradition of full-sentence game show titles, NBC also debuted “My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad” (3.5), which was comparable to “Deal’s” Monday 9 p.m. premiere, but was down 13% from the most recent four-week average in the time period.
Fox nabbed second with new episodes of “Prison Break” (3.1) and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” (3.2). “Terminator” held steady from last week’s episode.
CBS came in third with a 2.8 for its grab bag of new and repeat episodes of its Monday lineup.
ABC placed fourth (2.1) with the season finale of “Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann,” whose ratings consistently slid downward week-to-week during its seven-week run (the show premiered with a 3.0).
“War” even had the exclusive of announcing the cast of the newest “Dancing With the Stars,” and still stumbled from last week.
The CW took fifth (0.7), premiering “Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,” (0.9) down 47% from last year’s “Pussycat” season premiere.
Friday
Fox won Friday (2.6) with “House” repeats.
NBC (2.2) aired the season finale of “Las Vegas” (2.3), which placed second for the night. CBS (1.6) had repeats and a Celine Dion special (1.4). The Dion special aired in the slot usually filled by “Moonlight,” and was down 30% from the vampire drama’s season average. ABC and The CW tied for fourth (1.3).
Saturday
“Cops” and “America’s Most Wanted” gave Fox the win handily on Saturday with a 2.3, beating a field of movies and repeats from NBC (1.5), ABC (1.3) and CBS (1.2).
