The creators of Discop East will launch a new niche content market, Discop Africa, in February in Dakar, Senegal. The three-day convention will bring TV program buyers and sellers together for content acquisition and distribution in Africa.
Discop Africa ’09 will be organized by Discop and the National Association of Television Program Executives, which have put on successful Discop East conventions for central and eastern European and central Asian markets.
“The advent of low-cost digital television has made the African continent one of the world’s new emerging markets,” said Patrick Jucaud, Discop general manager. “More than 300 national, regional and thematic TV channels are now available servicing the entertainment, educational and information content needs of an ever-growing number of viewers. It is important that these channels have access to high-quality programming with the power to draw large audiences.”
NATPE has been committed to creating and distributing TV content across conventional and emerging new media. The association holds its own annual conference for buyers and sellers in the U.S.
Discop partnered with NATPE in 2005. It has organized its Discop East show since 1991.
Next year’s African conference marks the first major gathering focused on meetings between TV program sellers and buyers on that continent.
