MTV U Tries to Reduce March Madness

Mar 5, 2008  •  Post A Comment

MTV’s college network, MTV U, will be running special mental health programming this month aimed at reducing the stresses that lead to student suicides.
The channel’s campaign, “Half of Us,” features musicians talking about how they have dealt with depression and have gotten help.
This year, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins is featured in an interview directed by Joel Schumacher. Mr. Corgan talks about how success and instant fame reopened scars of childhood abuse; he also advises students to utilize resources offered by their schools to help them cope.
Another special features rap artist Cage talking about how he has used music to battle his own drug abuse and psychotic tendencies.
Since the campaign started in 2006, Mary J. Blige, Pete Wentz, Brittany Snow and Max Bemis have participated.
Students who are veterans of the Iraq War talk with an expert on post-traumatic stress disorder in another segment of the campaign.
MTV U has joined with the Associated Press on a college mental health poll looking at how the war, starting a career, campus safety, technology and substance abuse affect student stress levels. Results of the poll will be released toward the end of the month.
“March is a month when the nation celebrates college culture, and this year we aim to use the moment to spark a dialogue about the serious mental health issues going unaddressed on college campuses—claiming the lives of countless students each year,” said Stephen Friedman, general manager of MTV U. “Our special ‘Half of Us’ March programming is part of a year-round commitment to chipping away at the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health, as well as connecting students to the necessary resources.”
MTV U works on the campaign with the Jed Foundation, a group that works to reduce suicide and emotional stress among college students.

  1. March is a month when the nation celebrates college culture, and this year we aim to use the moment to spark a dialogue about the serious mental health issues going unaddressed on college campuses—claiming the lives of countless students each year,” said Stephen Friedman, general manager of MTV U. “Our special ‘Half of Us’ March programming is part of a year-round commitment to chipping away at the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health, as well as connecting students to the necessary resources.” is not quite true: What they are doing is pandering to a prejudice, “stigma” and calling it “real.” It is not.
Secondarily, and equally ironic, they are aiming to “reduce” this prejudice, not end it.
I am very pleased, and I am sure women here are, that they were not around to work to “reduce” the “stigma” of rape here. I do not think women would have accepted their goal, nor is one sure what “reduce” means.
How much of this prejudice does MTV U want to retain, and why any? Inquiring minds want to know.
