Lifetime Goes HD Via U-verse, FiOS
Lifetime Networks on Tuesday started airing its flagship Lifetime Television channel in high definition after reaching distribution agreements with two fiber-optic television services, AT&T’s U-verse and Verizon’s FiOS. Lifetime, co-owned by Walt Disney and Hearst Corp., started showing its Lifetime Movie Network in HD last year.
‘Oprah’ to Air in Hi-Def This Fall
“The Oprah Winfrey Show” will start airing in high definition this fall, Broadcasting & Cable reports. Prime-time specials from Winfrey’s Harpo Productions such as “The Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special” have already been shown in HD, Broadcasting & Cable says.
Most Broadcasters Plan HD Content Online
About three-quarters of cable and network broadcasters plan to offer their content online in high-definition format, according to a survey by Web video service provider Akamai Technologies. More than 80% of respondents either already provide such content or are planning to do so within two years, Akamai said.
CBS’ ‘Survivor’ Will Air in HD This Fall
CBS will be the first network to feature an on-site reality show in high definition when it premieres the 17th version of “Survivor” in the fall, Daily Variety reports. “American Idol,” “Dancing With the Stars” and “American Gladiators” are the only network reality shows shot in HD, the newspaper says.

Vizio Challenges Sony, Samsung in U.S.

Vizio is challenging Sony’s and Samsung’s U.S. flat-panel television market share by using cheaper panels and contract agreements with manufacturers to make less expensive TVs, the Wall Street Journal reports. Vizio revenue almost tripled to almost $2 billion last year as the average cost of a flat-panel TV dropped 24%, the Journal says.
Rainbow Networks Signs Satellite Deal With Intelsat
Cablevision’s Rainbow Networks unit, which includes AMC, IFC and Voom HD networks, signed a multiyear agreement with satellite operator Intelsat for its North American high-definition programming.
Technicolor, CinemaNow to Partner in Content
Technicolor and movie-download provider CinemaNow will partner in services related to electronic distribution of CinemaNow’s 10,000 titles. The companies will work together on encryption and digital rights management, among other services, while adding high-definition content to CinemaNow’s inventory.
