CW Confirms It’s Subletting Sunday Night

The CW confirmed earlier reports that it will turn over its Sunday night programming block to the Media Rights Capital production studio for the 2008-2009 broadcast season.
“This is a strategic move by The CW that will give viewers more original programming on Sunday nights than we have ever had,” Dawn Ostroff, The CW president of entertainment, said in a statement. “MRC will bring a slate of high-quality entertainment to our air on the most competitive night on television, while we will focus our resources and efforts on strengthening our Monday-through-Friday schedule.”
The CW will begin the new fall season without one of its major ratings draw, WWE’s “Friday Night Smackdown,” which was picked up by MyNetworkTV in February after The CW’s exclusive negotiating window expired.
John Maatta, chief operating officer at The CW, said the move will give the network’s sales team “more opportunity to capitalize” on Friday programming for the “weekend product push.”
MRC’s Sunday night programming, which will include two new comedies and two new dramas, will be announced Tuesday at The CW’s upfront presentation.

  1. For the first time in a while, I’m at a lost for words. Just when The CW continues its self-destructive path (cancelling its number-one rated series [SmackDown], cancelling Kids’ WB! by selling the timeslot to a competitor, and cancelling a heavily popular urban sitcom [Girlfriends]), this happens. They don’t even want to program an entire night of programming themselves.
It’s apparent CBS doesn’t care and Time Warner is completely running the show, and like the rest of THAT company, they’re trying to destroy The CW as well.

  2. You’re wrong buddy, it’s not Time Warner completely running the show……it’s the other way around. Had it not been for CBS’s input, The CW might have nit canceled Kids’WB due to it reflecting UPN’s formal rival…The WB. Plus, CBS is rying to turn The CW into the new UPN….focusing solely on Mon-Fri. as UPN did.
