Simplifying the Complex: Tim Napoleon

May 15, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The player: Tim Napoleon, chief strategist, media and entertainment, for Akamai Technologies.
The play: Mr. Napoleon has helped Akamai, whose networks speed up its customers’ Web applications, grow its business among both standard- and high-def Web content providers. About 20% of daily Internet traffic runs through Akamai’s content delivery networks, which are used by companies such as Apple for its iTunes service, as well as Major League Baseball. Akamai’s annual revenue rose to $636.4 million last year from $428.7 million in 2006, Mr. Napoleon’s first full year with the company.
The pitch: Akamai has used its existing relationships with movie studios to become a leader in the HD delivery field. The company’s networks allow end-users to stream multiple videos from companies such as Walt Disney, Viacom, CBS, NBC and Hulu at approximately the same rate, no matter how far they are from the nearest data centers. “People snack on rich media content,” said Mr. Napoleon. “It allows the instant gratification of high-definition content.”
The challenges: U.S. high-speed Internet providers typically provide broadband service at a speed slower than that of countries such as Japan and Korea and often fall short of the delivery rate necessary to stream videos in high-def. “More than 50% of the audience connects to Akamai at speeds of over two megabytes a second, which most consumers would equate to higher-definition content,” Mr. Napoleon said. “We don’t have 90% to 100% of the audience. That’s probably a few years out.” Also, many video content services don’t have the functions to connect directly to televisions, though Mr. Napoleon said many of the licensing issues that prevent such a function may be solved in time for the upcoming holiday season.
Backstory: Mr. Napoleon, 33, joined Akamai in late 2005 after working for five years with VitalStream. There, he helped VitalStream—since acquired by Internap Network Services—develop a streaming function for Adobe’s Flash player. Born on a farm near Fort Collins, Colo., and raised in Cypress, Calif., near Los Angeles, Mr. Napoleon received his undergraduate degree from Cal State Fullerton and his MBA from USC. He is based in Orange, Calif.

  11. What a relief to discover a page that may perhaps be real at last in reality significance reading! I’ve been seeking all-around on the subject of this matter except men and women just put waste posts, or brief empty posts. I have noticed a couple vids on youtube but it’s now the equivalent as reading a good article.

  12. The whole level of [logo] layout just isn’t to show off??? what it is possible to do. It is not about bells and wh istles. It truly is that form of considering which has a good deal of latest designers applying gradients on every layout component as if that they had a little something to complete with v isual communication. The lion drawing does notneed any longer pol ishing. From exactly where I stand, It’s at a stage exactly where it may ONLY be employed or d iscarded. For those who consider it wants much more pol ishing ,that it really is too cartoony??? , or that you’ve styl istic objections with all the option, then maybe you??? re from the mistaken profession. You??? re complaining about a thing incredibly elementary to contemporary graphic layout. I have read from some of the greats on the topic of layout and I do believe that I’ve a deal with to the subject. It’s not your take care of, I understand that. What I do notunderstand is your style philosophy. It will be well known that you simply believe Nike and Shell are good manufacturers. Maybe you??? re an Global Style zealot who thinks a grid may be the answer to every layout dilemma. Maybe that’s what you meant by pol ished? Or even you??? re into lots of pointless detail on a logo that can grow to be no ise since it is shrunken down? I do notknow. My grammar is normally wonderful, thank you for asking. It can be my spelling that was off in various areas and for that, I apologize, but, you know, if my grammar was anywhere near as horrible as you declare then you??? d have had a tough time comprehending what I wrote. There would be nothing for you to react to. I do notknow about you, but it surely is very difficult for me to get indignant at gibber ish particularly when I have no concept what it means.

  13. It may sound weird but my browser does notseem to become ready to d isplay your post rightly?- It looks like a whole chunk of if shouldn’t be properly d isplayed and also the layout of your web page does notappear to be right. Can you verify that th is publish continues to be put together for Opera?
