Spike Gets Tough

Spike TV, Viacom’s cable network aimed at men, is getting ready to air a group of series featuring tough guys.
Tough guys are already proving to be a ratings grabber on cable. The crab fishermen of Discovery Channel’s “The Most Dangerous Catch” and the long-haul drivers of “Ice Road Truckers” are popular, particularly with a male demo often available only through sports programming.
Spike’s take on sweaty, dangerous guys is “River Men,” a documentary series about the men who make a living battling the mighty Mississippi River, towing football-field-size barges through treacherous waters, searing heat, icy cold and impenetrable fog. “River Men” is produced by Gay Rosenthal Productions.
Spike also is lining up a show on men who take the lives of other people. The show, “Human Predators,” is produced by Digital Ranch Productions.
The shows join a series on the slate about bounty hunters, “Tank & Cobra,” and a competition show pitting Americans with rough jobs against their overseas counterparts. In one planned episode of “USA vs. the World,” alligator wrestlers from Florida will take on crocodile wranglers from northern Australia.
And because guys may be tough but aren’t always all that smart, the network plans to air “Idiot Hall of Fame.” This half-hour series uses real footage to take a humorous look at some of the most idiotic actions of all time. The series is being produced by Simon Andreae and his production company, the Incubator.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with some of Hollywood’s most creative minds to present a development slate that we feel will further the notion that Spike is a true destination for original programming for guys,” said Sharon Levy, senior vice president of original series for Spike TV.
