Blu-ray Gets The Violent Treatment in September
Blood will be a little redder in the fall as “L.A. Confidential” and both volumes of Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” films will be released on Blu-ray in September. “Confidential,” the 1997 neo-noir thriller that won two Oscars, will be available to the public Sept. 23 for $28.99, according to Warner Home Video. On Sept. 9, “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” and “Vol. 2,” both starring Uma Thurman, will see the light of day, Web site EngadgetHD.com reports, citing a person with access to the Walt Disney retailer Web site that it didn’t identify.
Film Executives Forecast $1 Billion in 2008 Blu-ray Sales
Sales of Blu-ray discs and players will reach $1 billion this year and may more than double in 2009, Video Business reports, citing film executives at Los Angeles’ Home Entertainment Summit. Revenue may be held back by the availability of cheaper upconverters, which outsold Blu-ray set-top players by a seven-to-one margin last year, the magazine says.
Shanghai to Try Out Wireless HDTV Broadcasts
Shanghai will become the second city in China, behind Beijing, to try out a wireless high-definition broadcasting service, China Daily reports. CCTV, which is providing the free service, will televise the European Cup and will likely air the Summer Olympics, China Daily says.
Philips Unveils HDTV Models, Blu-ray Player
Philips this week unveiled seven new high-definition television models, which range in screen size from 32 to 52 inches and are priced from $799 to $2,899, Web site Electronista.com reports. The company also launched its second-generation Blu-ray player, which will retail for $399, the Web site says.
Amazon.com Gives 34% Discount on TiVo HD DVRs
Amazon.com this week is offering TiVo high-definition digital-video recorders for $197, or $102 less than TiVo’s suggested retail price, Web site TVPredictions.com reports. The HD DVR, which TiVo introduced last August and which can record as many as 20 hours of high-definition programming, has helped improve the company’s earnings as TiVo sold more set-top boxes at retail and gave fewer away in promotions.
Sony Places Two HD Camcorders in Australian PC World Top 5
Sony’s HDR-SR12 and PMW-EX1 were the best high-definition camcorders for storage purposes and for professionals, respectively, according to Australian PC World magazine. Canon’s HV30 was the best camcorder for traditionalists while Panasonic’s HDC-SC9 and Samsung’s VP-HMX10 were best for portability and best for those under a budget, the magazine says.
