NBC Universal will broadcast 3,600 hours of coverage from this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing across its various networks and NBCOlympics.com.
This year’s coverage sets the record as the most televised coverage in Summer Olympics broadcast history, amounting to more airtime than the combined total of every Summer Games from Rome in 1960 to Athens in 2004. More than 75%, or 2,900 hours, of the coverage will be broadcast live.
NBC’s broadcast network will take center stage for medal contests in swimming, men’s and women’s gymnastics and beach volleyball during prime time. Other competitions will air on USA Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo and Universal HD, in addition to NBCOlympics.com. NBCU’s coverage will average out to about 212 hours per day, more than the total for the Atlanta Games in 1996.
Also, this is the first time the Olympics will be broadcast entirely in high definition.
