Sony, Toshiba to Outsource More LCD TVs to Taiwan
Sony and Toshiba both will have more of their liquid-crystal display television sets built in Taiwan, Reuters says, citing Nikkei Business Daily. Sony has an agreement with Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision as part of an effort to have 3 million sets made in Taiwan for the current fiscal year; Toshiba will have Taiwan-based Compal Electronics make about 20% of its sets this year, the wire service says, citing the Nikkei. Meanwhile, Toshiba said this week that it will start selling its XD-E500 DVD player, which can be upconverted to handle high-definition discs. The machine will retail for $150, Toshiba says.
Weekly Blu-ray Disc Sales Off 27% on Slow Release Schedule
U.S. Blu-ray disc sales for the week ended Aug. 10 fell 27% from the previous week to $6.89 million, Web site EngadgetHD.com says, citing Home Media Magazine’s report of Nielsen VideoScan statistics. Warner Bros.’ “Batman Begins” was the best-selling Blu-ray title of the week, the Web site says.
Vizio Boosts Q2 Flat-Panel Unit Sales by 18%
Vizio’s second-quarter unit sales of flat-panel televisions jumped 18% from a year earlier, giving the closely held company the No. 3 market-share position among high-definition TV makers for North America, the company said last week, citing surveys by DisplaySearch and iSuppli. The company also leapfrogged Samsung among plasma TV makers for North America by tripling its unit sales to 240,000, Vizio said.

News Corp.’s BSkyB to Add 7 HD Channels in U.K.

News Corp.’s BSkyB satellite television service in the U.K., which launched its first high-definition channels in 2006, next month will add seven HD channels, bringing its total to 26, the Guardian reports. BSkyB’s new HD movie channels will debut with titles including “Hot Fuzz” and “The Sound of Music,” the newspaper says.
Olympics’ HD Footage Quadruples From 2004
NBC is shooting about 1,700 hours of the Beijing Summer Olympics in high definition, covering 34 sports, the New York Times says. That total is up from about 400 hours for six sports during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the newspaper says. In addition to HDTV owners, people watching the Games on standard-definition sets benefit because the original images are in higher resolution, the newspaper reports.
