Bush Speech Will Disrupt Premiere Week

President George W. Bush has come up with a September surprise for the networks, scheduling a prime-time address for tonight—smack dab in the middle of premiere week.
Mr. Bush will speak to the nation at 9 p.m. EDT about the proposed federal bailout of the U.S. banking system. A CNN.com report on the speech said Mr. Bush will speak “for less than 15 minutes.”
Fox has already announced it will deal with the speech by pushing back its schedule so that comedies “’Til Death” and “Do Not Disturb” simply air 15 minutes later than planned, at 9:15 and 9:45 p.m., respectively.
The other networks almost certainly will follow suit.
CBS is scheduled to air the season premiere of “Criminal Minds” at 9, NBC has “America’s Got Talent” and ABC is slated to air a two-hour David Blaine special. At 10 p.m., NBC brings back “Lipstick Jungle,” while CBS has the season premiere of “CSI: NY.”
Some network executives had worried Mr. Bush might decide to speak on Thursday night, a move that would have had much more financial impact on the networks since some of TV’s most popular shows (“CSI,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Office”) air on that night.
