Hailing itself as the most popular online TV store, Apple’s iTunes Store has sold more than 200 million show episodes, including topping the 1 million mark for HD episodes.
Apple began offering HD television content last month, charging $2.99 per episode, compared with $1.99 for standard-definition shows.
The selection runs the gamut of CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox, mainly pulling from network studios, such as ABC Studios’ “Grey’s Anatomy” and NBC Universal’s “30 Rock.”
“We’ve got an incredible fall 2008 TV lineup with over 70 prime-time comedies and dramas, including many of the most popular shows on TV in stunning HD,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s VP of Internet services. “With over 200 million episodes sold, iTunes customers have proven they love watching television on their computer, iPod, iPhone and TV with Apple TV.”
The CW is featured in the HD rotation as well, with CBS Paramount’s “90210” and Media Rights Capital’s “Valentine.” A majority of The CW’s content is produced by Warner Bros. Television, including flagship “Gossip Girl.”
“Gossip Girl” is consistently at the top of the sales chart on iTunes in terms of weekly downloads, but no Warner Bros.-produced shows are available in HD.
Warner Bros. said it is evaluating offering HD versions of WBTV shows.
