Obama Buys 30 Minutes of Prime-Time

Oct 9, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama purchased 30 minutes of time on CBS and NBC during prime time and is in talks to purchase spots on other networks, people familiar with the matter said.
The 30-minute ad will air from 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 29. It’s the first political ad buy of that length since Ross Perot ran for president in 1992.
The Obama campaign didn’t immediately detail the programming it planned but there were indications it was seeking to air the 30-minute program in a roadblock across the major TV networks, according to an official of one network. Calls to other networks were not immediately returned.
The campaign has also been in talks with Fox, though the scheduled airing of the sixth game of the baseball World Series could prevent it from airing the program, a person familiar with the matters said.
The Obama campaign’s TV buy comes in a year in which the presidential candidates have rewritten the rules of political ad buying by using network TV in addition to local TV in battleground states.
Before this year, no network TV had been bought by any presidential candidate in 12 years. Instead all advertising money went to battleground states.

  1. About time, after all the vicious McCain ads with virtually no response.
I actually like both men, but McC’s ads are so bad even Karl Rove, of all people, criticized them. LOL 🙂

  2. Sense when is telling the truth about the other candidate vicious??
First people say McCain is always angry and will fly off the handle at anything…then I heard and anchor say he was a wimp. So which is it?? While McCain is harshly criticized for every move he makes, Obama is praised and can do no wrong…despite his bad judgments on whom he chooses to closely associate himself with. He also keeps telling the American people that he will lower the taxes of 95% of Americans…however he neglects to say that he will also raise the taxes of anyone making over $250,000 a year (which by today’s standards is not very much if you have a family, only one working parent…house to pay for..etc…etc…)not to mention he will be getting rid of several tax deductions…such as the marriage deduction and adding back in the death tax…so you see…Obama hasn’t been exactly truthful with us. This whole thing about him buying prime time is ridiculous…proof that with enough money even the Presidency is for sell!

  3. StacyC:
First, please learn to spell and/or use the correct words. Your sentence should have began with a “Since” not “Sense.” Moreover, your last sentence should have ended with “sale,” not “sell.”
Second, like Senator McCain, you are completely out of touch with the American public. The vast majority of the population do not make $250,000 a year. In fact, only a tiny portion of te population actually makes that type of taxable income a year!
Third, with respect to Senator Obama’s associations, I am assuming that you are referring to his alleged association with Mr. Ayers. Clearly, you have not done your research or you would have known that this assertion has been widely refuted.
Fourth, your assertion that Senator Obama’s plan would eliminiate the marriage deduction and adding some sort of death tax is completely absurd. If you feel you can dispute this, please feel free to pontificate and engligten us all with evidence directly from the language of Senator Obama’s plan.
Fifth, being a wimp and angry are not two diametrically opposed. Someone can be both a wimp and angry at the same time.

  4. Ed:
First of all you don’t have to be mean…I’m actually typing while I’m working so please forgive the misspelled words. Like most of the democrats you immediately attack on personal and meaningless stuff, instead of trying to discuss your view and how it differs from my own. The differences between one view and another is what makes this country so wonderful and beautiful. Please try to discuss them like an adult and stay away from attacking.
And as for me being out of touch with “American Public”…well…I am the American public as I make WELL below the poverty level…however I do not want the government stepping in and giving me money…I would like to work for it. I also do not feel like this country should be taxing productivity to death…that’s called Socialism! Why on earth would it be fair to take money from people and give it to someone else?
And I’m not only referring to Ayers…there is a long list of people that Obama is associated with…and just because it’s refuted does not mean it’s the truth. Obama has even been noted quoting from a book Ayers’ wrote.
My I suggest you look up Obama’s voting record not only on taxes and economy but social issues as well…this alone should provide enough evidence for your forth disagreement. According to his voting record Obama Voted NO on permanently repealing the `death tax in June 2006.
And…”His plan would not raise any taxes on couples making less than $250,000 a year, nor on any single person with income under $200,000.” It amounts to a declaration of war on two-income families, a marriage penalty of punitive proportions. If those two single persons with income just under $200,000 get married, Mr. Obama is going to hammer them with a huge tax increase. If the second earner, who in many cases is the woman, is going to have to give 54% of what she earns to the government, she might as well stay home with the children. Mr. Obama may be able to get away with symbolic slights to women, such as not picking Senator Clinton as vice president. But punishing them with confiscatory taxes for participating in the workforce at a high income level moves the slight into the realm of substance'(https://www.tvweek.com/news/2008/10/obama_buys_30_minutes_of_prime.php)
Now for your 5th: Sen. McCain is NOT a whip or overly angry…if you don’t believe me perhaps you should take some of your time and spend it reading his book while he was a POW for 5 years…something that took extreme amounts of courage and faith to come through…

  5. Is everyone deaf, dumb, and blind!
    1) Obama has only accomplished one major thing since becoming a senator. He has run for President.
    2) Obama has wasted more money on advertising than any candidate in history.
    3) Obama was the first candidate to use attack ads.
    4) Of the two major candidates, Obama was the first to bring “race” up as an issue.
    5) Obama’s “spread the wealth” policies and government dictated healthcare are reminiscent of another form of government–socialism.
And, frankly, I don’t trust a guy who bans Christmas gift exchanges in his household to teach his daughters “limits”.
NEWS FLASH–The President isn’t the cause and solution to all of this nation’s economic problems…no matter who is in office. However, the President is responsible for much of the our foreign policy. If the U.S. winds up in a showdown with an aggressive country, I’d like a person in office who understands the perils of war firsthand. In times such as these, the United States can’t afford to grant an untried commander on-the-job training.

  6. WAY TO GO ED!! The Republicans are just upset because FUTURE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA has not only the brains and courage to show them how a presidency is won with “dignity” and “honor” and not insults but also has the MONEY that they are used to having from their “blue blooded” right wing connections and believe it or not Stacy the money comes from hard working grass roots Americans like myself! Unlike your candidate who believes like his intellectual running mate that this country should be divided as Pro Americans vs Non Americans I guess. But you still believe Mc Cain is such a wonderful Ameirican POW OKAY SEE YA AT THE POLLS LOVE!!!

  7. Republican Idiots: The rich Republicans have been practicing “spread the wealth” for the last eight years under Bush. The wealth was spread to the filthy rich and wealthy corporations as they were given the biggest tax cuts in history. The Bush Administration has grown the government in record numbers especially with the massive spending on the Iraq War. McCain is looking for a reason to start some more wars. If he gets into office and start these wars, he will tell the American people (like his twin, Bush did), “We must put the domestic agenda on hold because WE ARE AT WAR!” And once again, the economy will take a backseat along with education, health care, jobs, etc. Does McCain really expect Americans to believe that he is interested in creating more jobs?
Going back to the tax breaks for the rich, those corporations used that part of their wealth to buy up other companies, lay American workers off (or hire illegal workers for less money), and move their companies overseas. That “trickle-down” effect was only trickery – smoke-and-mirrors. If more of these rich companies get more tax breaks, it will be more of the same. Bush and McCain are twins: TWEEDLE-DEE (McCain) and TWEEDLE-DUM (Bush).

  8. I’d like to know where all these 200K and 250K annual incomes are, they definitely aren’t in my profession (BA, MALS). Additionally, the 250K on income for small businesses is after business related expenses. Now, if you are clearing 250K after employee pay/benefits (if there are any), supplies, workmen’s comp., insurance, overhead etc etc. you are doing pretty good.
As for previous associations of any presidential candidate: hey, I hung out with some pretty radical people when I was in college, doesn’t mean I do now…unlike many politicians Senator Obama does not deny knowing Ayers, who is a professional and not a convict. And what about McCain, doesn’t he know Bush? I would question his associations at this point.
Please, can we address health care, poverty, hunger, equal pay for women, men’s rights to custody, our educational system, declining college assistance (thank you republicans), the care of our returning soldiers….
Frankly, I’ll be glad when this is all over and as much as I would love to see progress in this country with Obama, it may not be a bad idea for the wealthy republicans to stay in office..I’m still waiting for that trickle down wealth….

  9. Thank you thank you thank you…News Producer Mattman!
LADY FRYE…the money comes from my “grassroots self” as well…and the government does not need to tell us who is and who is not wealthy…in fact the so called “stimulus package” that was suppose to help the middle class…well my husband who was in school full time (trying to get into med school)and working part time and me with 2 jobs still don’t even qualify for middle class…but the great and wonderful government thought we didn’t need the $1200 allotted for couples making less that $50,000 a year…so we only got half of that…now tell me why I should trust the government with any more of my money or my health care?? …and yes I still believe McCain is a wonderful American
    Dave:
enough name calling already! Being rude to those that don’t agree with you doesn’t change facts…no need to call Republican’s idiots. Bush and his administration haven’t done everything right…but then again I can’t name one President that has…but let us not forget that the last 2 years that Democrats have had control of the senate and from the votes on the table they can’t get ANYTHING done and passed that will actually help anyone.
    barbara:
I know lots of people who own small businesses that make 200-250K a year…and yes they are doing decently…but they also have families and homes they are paying for and if the government was to come in and take 35% of their earnings in taxes…and up the payroll tax…then they would not only have trouble keeping their own home and business afloat but they also would probably have to lay off employees. Why should we tax ANY productivity? For that matter we shouldn’t raise ANYONE’s taxes either. That isn’t what this country was built on…we came here to get away from the way Europe was running things…now we have someone running for office who wants to take us back there…
As for the republican’s declining college assistance…Back when Clinton was in office I applied for college assistance and aid…I was told that if I was black or if I had a baby and wasn’t married I could get it…otherwise I was out of luck! so it wasn’t just the republicans who were responsible for that one. But you are right about one thing…we DO need to focus on all the issues and stop blaming and throwing stones and name calling. That includes social and moral issues as well as the economy, health care and the others that you named.

  10. Actually…
Europe was not socialist when the “Pilgrims” emmigrated to the “New Country”. Most of it was still aristocratic. Even England was mostly aristocratic in spite of Mercantilism beginning to raise it’s head.
The “Pilgrims” were ushered off to here because (if you are to believe the sociologists) they were miserly, refused to give alms to the poor and attend or support cultural/theatrical causes.
It is also Britain’s Mercantilism that made the colonies wealthy, so wealthy that when the colonies (not just individuals, but the landed, local governments) wanted to start controlling that wealth (by levying their own taxes, not funding King George’s wars, etc.), war broke out. The motto wasn’t “No taxation” but “No taxation wihtout representation”.
Socialism doesn’t start in Europe until the French Revolution and doesn’t become the socialism we’re familiar with until after WWI and WWII. And that socialism was based on an interpretation of our democracy (coming from Pres. Woodrow Wilson’s “14 Points” and the Marshall Plan).
Which leads to the discussion of socialism. Socialism is not a political ideal so much as an economic ideal, stating that the society as whole should be as prosperous as possible. It is based on some limited economic planning, and has been rather successful considering that workers in European countries work fewer hours, have more vacation, and their economies are on similar productivity levels with ours (and they get subsidized education and singlepayer health care to boot).
I am not a proponent of socialism, but neither am I a fan of people using the term as if it’s a dirty word.
Also, socialism does not limit people’s ability to produce (which most of you, it seems, equate with freedom- that is not nec. the case).
I could speak more, but most of you probably haven’t even read this far. So if you want more let me know

  11. As for the tax breaks for those making $250,000 or less, Obama will make sure that happens. He may even make sure that the maximum is raised in a few years due to inflation (maybe $300,000). If he sees some problems, he will work to correct them. He will be a president that will listen to the American people.
We see John McCain scrambling in the backfield to present something that sounds like it makes sense to his listeners. He has no plan. He is making campaign promises just like any other politician especially a la Bush. He is going to make sure that his friends, especially in Exxon-Mobile get their share of the wealth that the Bush Administration gave them.
