FiOS, Vudu Expand HD Offerings

On-demand providers Verizon FiOS TV and Vudu have beefed up their high-definition offerings.
Verizon this week said it crossed the 1,000-title threshold, while Vudu claimed the largest HD library in existence with 1,100 titles.
Aggressively adding HD content during the month of October, Vudu averaged an additional 150 HD titles per week during that month.
Using a set-top box, Vudu users can rent films in HD for $3.99 to $5.99, with transmission of the content over an Internet connection, instantly and on-demand.
“We’re certainly proud to offer the largest HD library on the planet, but the motivation to accomplish this really sprang from our customers, retail partners and home theater installation professionals, all of whom were asking for more HD content,” Edward Lichty, Vudu’s executive VP of content, said.
In comparison, Apple offers nearly 700 titles in HD on the iTunes Store.
Vudu said it is continuing to add HD content.
Verizon FiOS TV hit the benchmark of 1,000 HD video-on-demand titles on Tuesday, two months ahead of schedule, the company said.
New offerings include titles from Starz and Sundance Channel, along with Showtime series “Weeds,” “Brotherhood” and “Dexter.”
“FiOS TV offers a home entertainment experience that cable can’t match, and now it’s even better,” Terry Denson, VP of FiOS TV content and programming, said.
Verizon FiOS is available in 8.2 million homes across 14 states, including California, New York, Florida and Texas.

  1. It doesn’t look like Verizon will make the 150 HD channels promised by the end of 2008, but they are ahead of pretty much every other provider. Here is an up to date HD channel comparison: http://www.defefx.com/hd-channels/
