Slower North American TV Growth Still Beats Estimates

North American television shipment year-over-year unit growth during the third quarter slowed from the second quarter, though it still exceeded previous forecasts, NPD Group DisplaySearch said today. U.S. customers took advantage of cheaper plasma TVs to buy more flat-screen televisions in advance of the switchover to all-digital broadcasts in February, the report said.
Additionally, Samsung and Sony expanded their lead over other TV makers in North American flat-screen market share.
Manufacturers shipped more than 10 million units to North American retailers during the third quarter, almost 12% more than a year earlier, DisplaySearch said. While the growth rate slowed from the 28% second-quarter growth rate, it still beat DisplaySearch’s September forecast that 2008 North American shipments would rise 6.1% from last year.
North American sales beat forecasts largely because plasma shipments, which were forecast in September to be flat this year, jumped 20% as prices for many 42-inch models dropped below $1,000; prices for 50-inch plasmas also fell. Shipments of liquid-crystal display sets, predicted to rise about 25% for the year, also rose more than 20% as prices for many 32-inch models dropped below $500, DisplaySearch said.
Meanwhile, North American flat-screen leader Samsung, which doubled its North American shipments from a year earlier, combined with No. 2 Sony to account for 31.7% of the North American flat-screen market during the third quarter, up from 29.1% during the second quarter. Sharp also boosted share while Vizio and LG Electronics each saw their North American market share fall slightly.

  1. It’s nice to sometimes see the little guy doing as well as the big Asian corporations. I have a Vizio model and it is just as good or better than my Samsung. Keep on pluggin’ Vizio!

  2. I agree, Vizio is a great brand and it’s good to see when companies like that can compete.

  3. At 1st glance, I thought it was really cool. On 2nd glance, it really is REALLY cool. Burnley +1, cognoscenti fail!

  4. Yale is previous logo flat out sucked. My cat could have accomplished that.
