Hugh Jackman will serve as host for February’s “81st Annual Academy Awards” telecast on ABC, the network confirmed Friday.
This will be Mr. Jackman’s first time hosting the ceremony. He previously hosted the Tony Awards twice, winning an Emmy for the 2004 show.
“Hugh Jackman is a consummate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star,” said Oscarcast producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Bill Condon in a joint statement. “He also has style, elegance and a sense of occasion. Hugh is the ideal choice to host a celebration of the year’s movies—and to have fun doing it.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ decision to have Mr. Jackman host the ceremony comes after last year’s broadcast was the lowest rated and least watched since Nielsen Media Research began measuring the telecast in 1974.
The ceremony will air live on ABC Feb. 22 from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
