Telemundo’s Growth Surpasses Broadcast Networks’

Dec 18, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Telemundo is becoming the fastest-growing major broadcast network in prime time, according to Nielsen Media Research data for 2008.
The Spanish-language network saw its total viewers grow by 13% from 2007, putting it ahead of NBC’s 10% increase. Fox and Univision rounded out the list of increases with 2% each, while Telefutura, ABC, CBS and The CW all posted declines in total viewers.
Telemundo also saw the most growth in adults 18-49, increasing 10% from 2007. The network is on pace to register six consecutive months of growth in the coveted demographic.
During 2008, Telemundo broadcast four of the top 10 telenovelas in its history among adults 18-49. On the sports side, the Rumbo al Mundial franchise attracted nearly 15 million unduplicated total viewers.
“In light of a particularly challenging media environment, we are exceptionally pleased to celebrate a record-breaking year for Telemundo,” Don Browne, president of Telemundo, said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to deliver high-quality programming and content to viewers in 2009, building on the tremendous ratings successes of 2008.”

  1. I just don’t know what Mr. Don Browne calls quality programming. Every since I can remember Spanish television programming in general hasn’t change that much in spite a drastic demographic changes in the Hspanic community. The executives mentality it’s always been; “If ain’t broken don’t fix it” which is good for their pockets but so for the Latino television audiences.

  2. From what I have observed–as a viewer of both the Spanish television networks (Univision, Telemundo, Telefutura) and the English broadcast networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX)–quality programming is merely dependent upon what you consider “quality.” If I remember correctly, the premises of telenovelas, despite their supposed superfluousness, have proven to become so acclaimed that they’ve inspired English versions, as “Betty La Fea” did for ABC’s “Ugly Betty” and Telemundo’s “Sin Senos No Ha Paraiso” will do for NBC’s upcoming “Without Breasts There Is No Paradise.” In fact, “Sin Senos” reflects a [risky] maturation in Spanish telenovela storytelling, recounting the story of a 17-year old girl who becomes a prostitute and gets breast implants in hopes of attracting wealthy pushers and achieving a life of luxury, only to confront lifelong hardship and physical pain. I believe that Telemundo especially is taking risks with programs such as the aforementioned, and viewers have responded amazingly, visible by the record numbers of people tuning in at the 10PM timeslot of “Sin Senos.”
    Furthermore, if by “quality” you mean cinematic advancement and not thematic depth, then perhaps I see your point. The truth is that the Spanish-speaking networks do not have the millions of dollars to spend on big-budget productions such as “Lost” or even “Friends” ($1M per main actor!). And finally, if you take a quick glance at today’s English-network hits, you’ll see that many of them are
    a) programs that have been running for quite some time like “CSI,” “Law & Order,” and “The Simpsons,” or
    b) are simply remastered versions of past shows:
    Lipstick Jungle = Sex & The City
    90210 = Beverly Hills, 90210
    Private Practice = Grey’s Anatomy = ER
    CSI NY = CSI Miami = CSI
    So, what you say is true–“not much has changed,” but most visibly in English.
