Hallmark Plans More Originals, Adds Short Films From NYU Students

Hallmark Channel says it plans to produce 35 original movies during the 2009-10 television year, up from 30 this year.
The cable network plans to continue to air the made-for-TV movies in a consistent timeslot on Saturday nights, which has helped it build a loyal audience for them.
Hallmark’s original movies have averaged a 2.4 household rating and 3.8 million total viewers so far in 2009.
“Original movies have always been the centerpiece of our schedule,” said David Kenin, executive VP for programming at Hallmark Channel. “The format allows us to deliver content that consistently reflects our brand, in turn helping us build a loyal audience hungry for the type of programming we offer—uplifting, inspirational, feel-good movies that provide predictability in this unpredictable world.”
Four of the movies are already in production: “Mrs. Miracle,” “The National Tree,” “A Soldier’s Love Story” and “Uncorked.”
Another eight are in development: “Christmas in Canaan,” “The Christmas Gift,” “Home Sweet Home,” “The Night Before the Night Before Christmas,” “Puppy Love,” “Shadow on the Mesa,” “The Wild Girl” and “Working Miracles.”
Meanwhile, Hallmark Movie Channel announced it is partnering with the NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and TV and will showcase short films by the school’s students and alumni.
The shorts will begin airing in October under the banner “Film Positive.” They can also be seen online at hallmarkmoviechannel.com.
Alec Baldwin, a Tisch alum, will be on the panel of judges who determine which films appear on the network.
“This alliance provides a unique opportunity for young up-and-coming filmmakers to showcase their work on a national platform, and serves as a layer of added educational value for NYU’s film students,” said Henry Schleiff, president-CEO of Crown Media, Hallmark Movie Channel’s parent. “The project also expands Hallmark Movie Channel’s visibility in the filmmaking community and establishes the channel as an outlet for collaborative and creative expression.”

  1. Do you produce movies or miniseries with some mild ‘language’ and insinuated sex?

  2. No, I write fictional books, historic/romance/dramas. I’m not a college student however, and I think that’s what you’re looking for. I’m far from it. But if you would ever need an idea for a professional movie or miniseries, feel free to contact me. Thanks for the inquiry!

  3. Actually, I have said in a profile that my books do have mild language and implied sexual scenes. I forgot to inquire who is asking, and where did you see that particular profile? Please answer and let me know who I’m speaking with. Thank you.
