ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” and “Brothers and Sisters” were among the honorees in television categories announced at Saturday’s presentation of the 20th GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation holds annual ceremonies in multiple cities in order to recognize those who help ensure an accurate, fair and inclusive representation of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in mainstream media.
ABC’s “Housewives” was named outstanding comedy series, while the network’s “Brothers and Sisters” won for drama series.
CBS’s “The New Adventures of Old Christine” won for an individual episode without a regular LGBT character for “Unidentified Funk.” The trophy for talk show episode went to “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” for “Ellen & Portia’s Wedding Day.”
Univision’s “Aquí y Ahora” won for Spanish-language TV journalism in the newsmagazine division for the segment “A juzgar por las apariencias.”
Special recognition also went to Showtime’s “The L Word,” which recently had its series finale, and FunnyorDie.com’s Web video “Prop. 8: The Musical.”
Special awards also went to Kathy Griffin and Bishop Gene Robinson.
Ms. Griffin received the Vanguard Award, given to an individual who has “increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community in the media.” Ms. Griffin regularly features LGBT people in her Bravo series “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List” and her standup specials, and is a strong supporter of same-sex marriage.
Bishop Robinson won the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, presented to an openly LGBT person “who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community in the media.” Bishop Robinson is the first openly gay bishop in the history of the Episcopal church.
Other GLAAD Media Awards winners were announced at an earlier ceremony March 28 in New York (here link to https://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/03/tyra_banks_phil_donahue_among.php), while more winners are to be revealed May 9 in San Francisco.
