Looking to reduce production costs, Fox Television Stations and the E.W. Scripps Co. established a local news service that will allow the use of shared footage among stations in Detroit, Phoenix and Tampa, Fla., the companies announced today.
Scripps and Fox stations in those markets will use pooled footage at general news events, but will be able to use editorial control as the stations see fit, the companies said.
The companies said they are looking to eliminate duplicate footage of news events.
Aside from the combined resources, the stations will remain separate in all other aspects of the business, including newsgathering operations.
Scripps and Fox also said they are looking to include other partners in Detroit, Phoenix and Tampa.
“We are pleased to be working with Scripps, a company that faces reality, makes quick decisions and understands what it takes to keep local television robust and independent,” Jack Abernethy, Fox Television Stations’ chief executive officer, said in a statement.
Fox and NBC signed a similar arrangement last year for their owned stations in large markets including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Washington, D.C.
