Is Sex Work Sanitized in Showtime Series?

Showtime’s new series, “Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” may be criticized for presenting a sanitized version of the sex trade, the New York Times says. The producers of the series, originally broadcast in the U.K., and its star disagreed. “I genuinely believe the character in now way is an ideal situation,” said Billie Piper, best known to U.S. viewers as Rose Tyler on “Dr. Who.” “She has to face some real moral dilemmas. She can’t tell anyone she loves anything about what she does. She’s on her own, and I think that becomes a massive problem.”
