Cable operators including Charter Communications have backed away from using online advertising-targeting for fear the technology will anger privacy advocates and lawmakers, the Wall Street Journal says. Technology from firms including NebuAd tracks consumers wherever they go on the Web by assigning them anonymous numbers, but a Senate panel Wednesday will convene to determine whether those practices violate wiretap laws, the Journal says.
