Hawaii Making DTV Switch Early

Oct 15, 2008  •  Post A Comment

The transition to all-digital broadcasting will come early to Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports. The Aloha State’s full-power television broadcasters will make the conversion Jan. 15, a full month before the rest of the country makes the switch on Feb. 17. Kauai residents are not affected by the conversion as they receive TV signals via low-power translators. The decision to get an early jump on the switch to digital was made after wildlife officials expressed concerns about the safety of the endangered Hawaiian dark-rumped petrel, which nests in broadcast towers each February.
