Lawmakers Want Tweaks in DTV Education

Oct 7, 2008  •  Post A Comment

Broadcasters and regulators have been told by members of Congress to start finessing digital TV transition education campaigns to warn viewers that they may need a new antenna or to adjust their old one, Broadcasting & Cable says. Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, including Chairman John Dingell, R-Mich., along with Telecommunications and Internet Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey, D-Mass., and other lawmakers, told the National Association of Broadcasters, the Federal Communications Commission and the National Telecommunications & Information Administration to implement the improvements to ease concerns that constituents will be without a television signal come February’s national transition to digital. Those fears are based in part on lessons learned in September’s digital transition trial in Wilmington, N.C. In a statement, the lawmakers said, “The commission has failed to provide the American public with adequate information concerning the need for new antennas and/or antenna adjustments to receive digital broadcast signals.”
