Lifetime Laughing with ‘Rita’

Lifetime is looking for laughs with its new original series “Rita Rocks,” which debuts Monday, USA Today reports. The network, long known for dramas such as “Army Wives” and its women in peril movies, is going with a family comedy built around a busy wife who escapes by spending time in a garage band. It’s part of a makeover at Lifetime. “We’re not going to do women-in-jeopardy movies, and we haven’t. That’s part of the old perception of the Lifetime brand,” JoAnn Alfano, Lifetime’s new entertainment chief tells the paper. “It’s a new time here … when you have shows like ‘Rita’ or ‘Army Wives,’ which is about women who are as heroic as the men they are married to.”
