Layoffs at the Weather Channel

The Weather Channel laid off an undisclosed number of employees yesterday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The network was purchased by media conglomerate NBC Universal earlier this year. Officials for both TWC and NBCU wouldn’t comment beyond a prepared statement that partially read, “The economic realities of recent months have created challenges for everyone in our business. In addition, when NBC Universal purchased the Weather Channel earlier this year, we expected that there would be cost synergies as part of company reorganization.”

  1. We are thrilled to anounce that Dr. Heidi Cullen, she of “All Tv Meteorologists who don’t publicly profess allegiance to global warming should have their AMS Seal of Approvals taken away” has been fired. Long live poetic justice.
Best of luck in the unemployment line.

  2. I and many others stopped watching the Weather Channel when they began espousing “global warming”. As I write the temperature here has been about 20 degrees below average for the last few days. We also had our first frost over 3 weeks ahead of schedule.
When I watch the weather, all I want is current conditions and/or the forecast. I don’t want to listen to a pseudo-science sermon.

  3. The economic reality is that ratings are down, thus cutting into ad revenues. Why are ratings down? Simple, people wanted weather, not climate change propaganda.

  4. The slowdown in the economy had nothing to do with the weather channel’s problems. Claims of global warming did!
The Internet is a much better, quicker, and more accurate way to get a forecast. Plus you don’t have to listen to the BS!

  5. Brrrrrrrrr! It’s cold here! So much for global warming and Dr. Heidi Cullen.

  6. Global Warming, is that why South Florida is 15 degrees below normal for the past 2 weeks. I also watch (or watched) the weather channel as I work outside. I didn’t want to listen to “We’re killing the planet with our green house gases!” Remember when it was the hole in the ozone.

  7. Yup, a few days of cold obviously trumps years of data. I love it when people stuff their heads in the sand and live in denial. It’s amusing.

  8. I love the weather channel as is, global warming, save the planet and all. Forget the rest of you. The facts about global warming are real but we’ll find out.

  9. 30 years ago it was Global Cooling and what they were calling the “Mini Iceage.” It’s a natural 25 – 40 year cycle of warming and cooling. It was hotter in 1900 then it was now. It was also hotter in 1867 then it is now. Where was Al Gore then?

  10. The cold temperatures are due to anomalies. The fact is, the climate is getting warmer, even with these severe cold snaps we have, they’re normal. The data from all over the place shows it. You can deny it all you want but the climate is definitely changing. Global Warming? Not so much. Climate Change? Yes.

  11. KC, did you not read my last post? It’s a natural 25 – 40 year cycle.

  12. Tom, TWC did not fire Dr. Heidi Cullen. She’s still working for them, albeit in a reduced capacity. So too is Natalie Allen. While the Forecast Earth tv series was scrapped at the same time as these layoffs, Nov 2008, it was the worker bees behind the series that were fired, i.e. the staff.
By the way, why I was practically in my bikini during xmas 2008 here in Georgia? I saw snow in Florida in the late 80’s. Yet, I’ve only seen it 3 times since I’ve moved northward up into Georgia. Why is that? Oh right, it’s just my imagination.

  13. For all of you who are saying that global warming means warmer weather, it doesn’t necessarly mean warmer weather, it means that the the earth’s climate is changing dramatically with more major storms like hurricanes and winter storms. But, I DO agree with all the global warming crap! I never really listen to them about it, because I already know.
