Antiheroes Crowding TV Programming

Jan 5, 2009  •  Post A Comment

In a TV landscape that finds itself cheering on the bad guys, Newsweek observes that “what once was seemed daring now feels predictable,” as the antihero on TV becomes the norm for gripping programming. The proliferation of bad-guy TV shows may be facing similar trends seen during the rise of reality TV programming, leading TV enthusiasts to question where a show can go after already touching upon the extreme, as in the recently departed “The Shield,” the magazine says. “Viewers will inevitably tire of them,” Newsweek says, noting that shows like “Mad Men” and “Damages” are still only pulling a fraction of what “The Sopranos” did in its heyday, leading viewers to a need for “dramatic characters.”
