New-Release DVD Sales Declined in ’08

An analysis of DVD sales figures by trade group Digital Entertainment Group shows that unit sales of new releases were down almost 20% in 2008, according to a report issued Wednesday by Sanford Bernstein analyst Michael Nathanson, the Hollywood Reporter says. Calling the decline “very troubling,” Nathanson added, “The current state of the DVD market will have negative near-term implications on media conglomerate earnings.”
