Daniel Pearl Press Act Introduced

Apr 2, 2009  •  Post A Comment

A new bill called the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act was introduced Wednesday that would ask the State Department to report annually on the state of press freedom worldwide, Broadcasting & Cable reports. The bill, introduced by Reps. Mike Pence, R-Ind., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., also would create a grant program to bolster media independence, the trade paper says. It’s named after the late Wall Street Journal reporter who was taken hostage and murdered by Islamic extremists, the publication says.
