YouTube to Become Local TV Newscast Rival?

Google-owned YouTube has signed up nearly 200 news providers for its News Near You feature, which figures out a user’s location and suggests relevant video, a service which could eventually become a rival to local newscasts, the New York Times reports.

YouTube, which splits ad revenues with the news providers, says it is helping TV stations find new viewers and revenue. Most of the current News Near You video, however, comes from non-traditional sources, not local stations, the Times reports.
