  1. Dear Mr. Shales,
Thank you for your insightful reflections on Walter Cronkite (a long time colleague and friend of my father’s), and your generous assessment of the pioneering generation of broadcast journalists. However, to quote Mark Twain, your report of my own father’s death has been “greatly exaggerated.” I am pleased to report that my dad Bill Small remains very vital, and active in journalism as the Chairman of the News & Documentary Emmys, National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Among his broad interests and commitments, he upholds his dedication to Fordham University where he is dean emeritus of the Graduate School of Business Administration. Although admittedly fewer in number, many of his original CBS News colleagues, now icons of broadcast journalism, continue to actively define television news as it was meant to be. Their close friendships, mutual respect, and the professional bonds forged during historic times for this country and for their craft will be their enduring legacies.
