Spielberg, Showtime Team for TV Series about Broadway That Will Lead to a Real Broadway Opening

Sep 23, 2009  •  Post A Comment

Showtime and Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks TV are in the early stages of developing a scripted show that tracks the creation of an original Broadway musical, with the plan to move the new musical created in the series to real-life Broadway after the show airs, reports Variety.

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who have adapted musicals for both theatrical and TV projects, are negotiating to join the series as are composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. All four worked on the film version of the musical "Hairspray." Most recently, Shaiman and Wittman penned the opening number that Neil Patrick Harris sung at the Emmys.

Both companies declined to comment. Spielberg has been developing the idea of doing a TV/Broadway crossover for years, according to Variety.
